Reserved for RM. As the story goes. . .Sailor’s Valentines originated as a way for sailors to not only express their love for wives and family, but to also wile away the endless days at sea. Fashioned from varieties of colorful shells found during their travels, these beautiful mosaics were originally housed in wooden boxes and covered in glass. I first became aware of these highly collectible works of art early during our 10 year sojourns to Nantucket for the summer. A raspberry Venetian glass intaglio/cameo is the focal point of this unique Sailor’s Valentine. Installed in an antique pocket watch, this unusual choice of centerpiece is a serendipitous departure from the usual scrimshaw ivory centerpieces of previous designs. The glass intaglio is encircled by a painstaking arrangement of the most minuscule pearls, miniature pink rice shells and coveted pink/blue operculum to accentuate the details of this tribute to Neptune. A luxurious hand-linked chain of creamy baroque pearls - acknowledging the bounty of the sea - and faceted pink sapphire connectors flanked with corrugated gold vermeil rondelles, intercept the chain at intervals. A collection of amulets referencing the provenance and romantic lore of Sailor’s Valentines, features a gold vermeil compass rose and anchor.
